The Grab-And-Go Stop I Make Before Every Route

I made a stop at Sprouts before a run and ended up walking the whole prepared foods case taking pictures like I was doing inventory. Not because I needed to — because I couldn’t believe how much was actually in there. Grilled salmon, shrimp, sirloin, real sandwiches, salads that aren’t sad. All of it sitting right next to the door I’d normally walk past on my way to a truck stop.

That’s the whole point of this post. My routes take me through a handful of surrounding states, and the drive-thru or the heat lamp at a travel center is always going to be the easy option. But easy isn’t the same as good, and Sprouts — and Whole Foods, if that’s what’s on your route instead — makes it just as easy to grab something real. You just have to love yourself enough to make that stop.

The lunch pail method

I don’t need a full cooler for this. Before I hit the highway I grab two or three things — a protein, a side, something to drink — and it goes straight into a small lunch pail up front. That’s enough to kill the drive-thru urge for the whole first leg of a route, and it’s already portioned so I’m not making decisions at 70 miles an hour.

Protein that’s already done

This is the part that actually keeps me full past the next exit. Sprouts has a whole case of pre-cooked proteins you can eat cold or heat up in the truck stop microwave, and none of it is fried. The Just Chicken, All White Meat is basically shredded rotisserie with nothing added, and at $5.07 it’s cheaper than most fast food sandwiches. The Mediterranean Chicken Bowl — chickpeas, hummus, feta, pickled onion — is $9.99 and eats like a real meal. Same with the Red Miso Atlantic Salmon Meal at $11.27 and the Beef Sirloin Chimichurri Bowl at $9.99. Lemon & Citrus Shrimp runs $8.16 and is the one I keep going back to.

Sandwiches that don’t need a second thought

When I don’t want a bowl, the grab and go sandwiches do the job. Turkey on Multigrain is $4.99, and the Herb Tuna Salad Croissant Sandwich is $6.49 and genuinely tastes homemade. Both travel fine in the lunch pail for a few hours without getting sad on you.

Sides that make it feel like a full meal

This is where I usually go a little overboard, but it’s worth it. Just Beets are $3.96 and an easy way to get something green — well, red — into the mix without trying. The Miso Tangy Crunch Salad ($8.21) and Smoked Mozzarella Pasta Salad ($4.60) both hold up in a cooler bag. Mango, cucumber, and jicama sticks with seasoning are a good palate cleanser between stops, and if I want something that feels like a treat, the Veggie Roll sushi at $6.99 or the Tuna Salad Snacker — pretzels, grapes, cheese, and tuna in one tray for $8.99 — both do it without a drive-thru bag involved.

Under $20, every single time

A protein plus a side plus something to drink lands between $12 and $20 almost every time I do this — and that’s before I even think about what a fast food combo actually costs once you add a drink and it still leaves you hungry an hour later. This isn’t a diet post. It’s a math and a self-respect post. The healthier option is sitting right there, already priced, already ready, for less than what most people spend not feeling good about their food.

You just have to love yourself enough
to make that stop.

I have routes running to a few surrounding states right now, so this isn’t a one-time thing — it’s becoming the stop before the stop. If you’re running a route this week, this is your reminder that a Sprouts or a Whole Foods is probably closer to your route than you think, and it’ll run you less than $20 to eat like you actually care about getting home in one piece.
